The Fun and Honor Society of the MCL

The Military Order of the Devil Dogs was established just ten years ago at the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston during the National Convention of the Marine Corps League. This Order serves as a secret fraternal society within the League, offering relaxation to the dedicated Leaguers chosen for membership by the esteemed Devil Dogs. Membership is exclusive, granted only through the sponsorship of a full-fledged Devil Dog. To be eligible for initiation at a National Convention, a Marine Corps Leaguer must have held active membership for a minimum of two years. Prior to this initiation, one can become a Mongrel in a local Pound and then advance to a Pup at the State Pack Convention. Alongside the entertaining and comedic activities of the Devil Dogs, the Order also plays an important role in supporting the League and advancing Marine Welfare Programs, with notable contributions from local groups like the Pikes Peak Detachment.

The Title

The name "Devil Dogs" was given to the Marines by the Germans during the First World War due to their ferocious fighting at Belleau Wood and Chateau Thierry. The gallant Fifth and Sixth Regiments were the spearheads of the Allied counter-attack that halted the German advance on Paris, a blow from which the enemy never recovered. This fierce determination is why the Germans dubbed the Marines as "Teu-fel-Hunden."

Just twelve years ago, Chief Devil Dog Joe Probst returned to France with the Marine Corps League on the Foreign Pilgrimage, attending the dedication services for the new memorial erected on Hill 204 at Chateau Thierry on October 7, 1937. Many Allied Generals, led by "Black Jack" Pershing, were present. Army General Harbord of the Second Division dedicated the monument, stating, "It is idle now to conjecture what might have happened if the enemy had not been stopped at the Marne. Certainly, there would have been no St. Mihiel and no Meuse-Argonne. Here, within sight of this memorial, the Fourth Brigade of the Second Division, comprised of two Marine Regiments, participated in one of the most agonizing struggles of the War. In 25 days of intense fighting, they captured the village of Bou reaches, pushed back the Germans, and drove them from the Bois de Belleau. This memorial testifies to our faith that we, the Marine Corps League and the Pikes Peak Detachment, can uphold and will maintain the principles for which these men died. Time will not dim the glory of their deeds."

Earned Fun

And so we take pride in the title of "Devil Dogs," a name earned for us by our comrades from the immortal Fourth Brigade, upholding the fierce spirit of "sprit de Corps" that defines Marines from the Shores of Tripoli to the stirring flag-raising on the hot rock of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. We celebrate the devil-may-care attitude of intrepid Sgt. Dan Daly, CMH, who rallied his Leathernecks with his iconic shout, "Come on, you so and sos, do you want to live forever?" Please indulge our antics; they are simply expressions of our exuberant spirits as we reunite with fellow Marines from the Marine Corps League, particularly at the Pikes Peak Detachment. It's a joyous relief to be back alive, and our timeless boyishness shows through as we enjoy some light-hearted horseplay to ease the pressures of our serious discussions, where we aim to find ways to support some of our buddies and their families who are less fortunate. And THAT embodies the essence of our motto — "SEMPER FIDELIS," Always Faithful!
